The Story of St. Arnold's

The Story of St. Arnold’s

Every Saint needs a miracle. That’s how the Church decides you are a Saint. “Don’t drink the water, drink beer” warned Saint Arnold of Metz , concerned about the dangers of drinking impure water, while the boiled and processed water used for beer was a safer alternative.

According to the legend he ended a plague when he submerged his crucifix into a brew kettle and persuaded people to drink only beer from that “blessed” kettle. The story of the miracle kettle of beer spread and eventually Arnold was canonized by the Catholic Church for it.

St. Arnold’s Mussel Bar’s two Washington D.C. locations in DuPont and Cleveland Park boast a comfortable, welcoming authentic Belgian experience reminiscent of a classic European tavern found in the alleys of Brussels. We carry 20 types of mussels paired with more than 40 types of authentic Belgian Draught beer, 20 select Belgian bottles, and a refined list of wine and traditional Belgian cocktails. St. Arnold’s Mussel Bar works closely with local purveyors and suppliers to ensure our ingredients are the highest quality and freshest available. While we have an emphasis on the traditional Belgian treat of mussels and frites, our full menu features classics for every customer.
